Crowds growing by Speakers Corner for an anti-racism protest in London after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. People are chanting his name and 'black lives matter'. Several thousand here already
Here's a better photo #BlackLivesMattter #blmldn
As you can see, physical distancing is not being observed but you could say people are less close to each other than they otherwise would be
Lots of people here holding signs referencing the names of black people who have controversially died in UK police custody. This protester claims her dad was wrongly imprisoned in London years ago and released without an apology after months of poor treatment
With crowds growing to as far as the eye can see, its fairly impossible to remain metres apart and the demonstrators - though many are masked - have other concerns
The chant now is the 'UK is not innocent' as applause rings out, with the organisers now asking the mostly young people to take a seat on the grass
The scene by Speakers Corner at Hyde Park now as protesters chant George Floyd's name
Jim Curran, chair of Irish civil rights association, tells me that English racism was first out into practice in Ireland before it was exported elsewhere. Using his experience of working on the rail, he reckons there are around 10,000 people here now
Internet connection not strong enough to post videos, but the chant is 'justice now' as organisers encourage people to sit down. Masks being handed out freely nearby
This gentleman takes a knee as his companion holds a portrait of George Floyd
'This is not the first rule we've been screaming this, it's been 400 plus years... And there are innocent black kids in prison in the UK today'
Crowds now heading out of Hyde Park across Park Lane. No planned march route so many people will just be following those ahead of them
Traffic at a standstill. Chant is now 'fuck Boris, fuck Trump'
'What do we want, justice, when do we want it, now'
Heading down Grosvenor place towards Victoria where the crowds at the front of the march, which were split into two, are going to unite
Gandhi's statue watches on as the demo passes Parliament Square, heading down Downing St now
Outside number 10...
The crowds have now splintered after some went across Westminster Bridge and others down Abingdon St at Parliament Square. The group which went past Downing St now marching along Horse Gardens avenue towards embankment
Outside Scotland Yard
'Everyone deserves the same chance as the white people'
Several police officers just took a knee after requests #blmldn
Police continually being asked to take a knee, some doing so to great applause. Few tense conversations between officers and protesters, and a tub of pasta just got lobbed as boos ring out. Reinforcements coming now
It's kicking off now. Unclear exactly what started things. Police appeared to attempt to take a man from the crowd and pandemonium ensued
I should add, things have calmed down significantly now after the video was taken. A couple of people were led away by officers. Tensions are growing and protesters here show no signs of heading to Trafalgar Square
As of now... Larger police presence, especially on far side where the incident occurred
The crowd has been thinning out. It would be a shame if earlier's flash point at all overshadowed what has overwhelmingly been a peaceful and positive demo. Sky News are reporting a police officer was punched, triggering the incident and arrests
Gridlock around Trafalgar Square. Vast majority of people have now gone home
Back at Downing St, where a couple hundred people remain: 'I'm supporting the cause and making sure everyone is aware of what's going on. Innocent black people are being killed in the US. The UK is not innocent.'
People presenting themselves as organisers imploring people to take the initiative to go home now and to reconvene for another protest on Saturday. I'll take that as my cue
In Westminster Station. 'I came to protest today because of inequality and the divide between us. Everyone should feel they have a voice and we feel suppressed by this justice system'
Given the video I posted has been widely viewed, thought important to note the clip in this article shows how incident began. Man walks past barrier towards police who push him by neck backwards (unclear what is said), struggle ensues, small brawl begins mol.im/a/8383747
As this got so little traction and my video from afar is doing crazy numbers, I wanted to post this here to show exactly what started events. You can watch the full video on the Daily Mail article if you scroll down
