Some clips from the start of yesterday’s LA City Council Meeting.

Nury tends to personalize...everything. She was understandably shook about her home town of Van Nuys facing looting, but its bizarre to hear that described as violence & no mention of LAPD violence vs protestors
This meeting was almost cancelled, we hear extended rants about “personal attacks” and “dissemination of misinformation.”
Our Council President is, first & foremost, worried about their safety. More on alleged misinformation and continued personal attacks. We have an absolute commitment to dialogue from @CD6Nury (even though she continues to limit public comment to minimize that same dialogue)
Krekorian zooming into city council from city council of past to tell us the “social media world has been lit afire with rampant misinformation.”
Krekorian explains the budget process through now and looking forward. He’s absolutely right that this is a fluid situation with revenues/expenditures which makes this a very rough budget that will have to be an ongoing work in progress (which most people have understood).
What Krekorian doesn’t explain is why they didn’t just vote to approve the budget they in effect allowed to pass? It would have in no way limited them moving fwd (thoughts on this next)

His attempted city council chamber inception then crashes zoom and he loses connection.
One thing they don’t say out loud, but may be at the root of their inaction is that since the budget’s release they got clear confirmation that revenues were now already projected to be AT LEAST $45 mil short. That’s an inherently unbalanced budget and it’s hard to dance around.
As a result, they couldn’t vote for it in good faith as is. You really can’t balance this budget in a sizeable way without making cuts to LAPD. Despite that not 1 motion to do to date!

LAPD is THE biggest 3rd rail issue at City Hall.

Here’s the “not budgeting by hashtag” clip
*to do so to date

@CD6Nury/@PaulKrekorian never address why they didn’t just approve the budget (toxic due to above & public backlash?), or why not one motion to explore LAPD cuts has come fwd.

Here Nury addresses how her tweets are met with a response that is“sometimes scary”
Nury says she’s “absolutely committed to continue this dialogue” yet she continues to limit public comment. Nearly all publicly comment allowed over the last month has had a uniform demand, a #PeoplesBudgetLA , yet not one single step to explore any LAPD cuts in any form.
Krekorian is correct that many social services are more in line with county, state, & fed responsibilities. But its disingenuous at best to act as though law enforcement is the only responsibility in the city’s jurisdiction and we can’t improve the lives of Angelenos otherwise.
If council is committed to this dialogue we need to see them speak about police brutality and LAPDs budget on the record, and not behind closed doors.

Only a couple members have done so during this last month but it definitely seems like things are changing. A lot happens...
...behind the scenes w/ them & there’s been a huge shift in the last week. Sometimes it takes a few tiny steps from a few members for others around the horseshoe to feel comfortable sticking their necks out there. Progress here may feel small but is, relatively speaking, huge.
This is like getting a kid to take medicine. They may hate it but they need it. You can bet they’ll be complaining to LAPPL behind the scenes about the public pressure.

June 8th is the next budget hearing, with 3 more in the month. The budget doesn’t take effect until July 1.
Pretty much everyone (minus Huizar of course) gave some remarks. There might be a lot of thanking/agreeing with each other and some of it may make your blood boil but you can better understand how to approach influencing them by giving it a listen.

@mhdcd8 was the one that stood out, he deserves some cred for really pushing back on a number of fronts.

1. Their ability/responsibility to shape the focus on police violence and away from looting. He may not mention the Chief but these certainly seemed directed there in part.
2. Most importantly, MHD reminded everyone we need to look within at the police brutality that happens in Los Angeles.

(Might not be much on budget here but on Mon w/ @alexcoheninla he, unprompted, said council needs to give a hard look at deprioritizing LAPDs budget)
3. “In this town, all of us, and I hold myself accountable for this. In all of this, we haven’t put forward one serious proposal. Not one.”

Then MHD helps remind Nury/Moore how their focus on looting allows anarchists to say “look they care more about windows than human life”
4. “Deal with the real petition of the people. We’ve got a problem with the lack of police accountability. We’ve got a problem with the loss of life of black men.”
