1/5 "Stubborn and Rebellious"
In Deut 21:18, 21, the stubborn and rebellious (סוֹרֵ֪ר וּמֹ֫רֶ֥ה) son is to be stoned to death. The collocation "stubborn and rebellious" appears only 4x in #TaNaK: Deut 21:18, 21; Jeremiah 5:23; Psalm 78:8, and they are significant.
2/5 In the two other places, "stubborn and rebellious" describe the heart of the people (Jer 5:23) & the wilderness generation (Ps 78:8), further identifying Israel as the disobedient son of Deuteronomy 21, and it's only a matter of time, sadly, before the death penalty comes.
3/5 But it should also be noted that Deut 21:22-23 (right after the disobedient son) contains a command to punish a man who commits a crime by hanging him on a tree, and that one is cursed for he hangs on a tree.
4/5 In Deut 21:18-23, the laws for dealing with the disobedient son and the criminal are left side by side in an intriguing way inviting Paul in Galatians 3:13 to connect them: Christ, *as* and *for* stubborn and rebellious Israel, hangs cursed on a tree.
5/5 Christ (God's Son and King) as Israel bore Israel's curse for Israel and the world.

Today I'm comforted to know God has dealt with stubborn and rebellious Israel in her king, Christ Jesus. Justice and mercy met at the cross & he (& us!) were vindicated in the resurrection.
