Back outside the White House. Today the perimeter has been pushed back another half block. Federal law enforcement of some kind, but they won’t identify themselves, and all insignias and name plates have been removed.
The Twitter hive mind has run pictures of the various insignias and flags and folks seem to think these are probably a Bureau of Prisons SORT (special operations) team, maybe from Texas.…
Whoever those guys were, they’ve now been replaced by DC National Guardsmen (with DC flags on their chests)
Shift change: National guard has been replaced with a different unit. One officer identified himself to protestors as being with “DOJ”, another said he was from California, and one has a Bureau of Prisons patch on his vest. No name plates.
Another shift change in DC tonight: on the line across 16th street right now are Utah national guardsmen (who identified themselves when I asked)
Just In: NBC’s Mike Kosnar obtains a statement from the Bureau of Prisons about their un-badged officers in DC. It’s long so I screen-shotted it, and their previous statement, sent upon their deployment
Eagle-eyed twitter followers have determined based on the patch on one guardsman’s shoulder that these are the 19th special forces group airborne. Command ethos includes: “Quiet professional Warrior – Diplomat” (optimistic thought: good at deescalation?)…
