This morning, Clark County considered a ban on backpacks and strollers at protests. What we didn't consider was any regulation on firearms, like the one used to shoot and critically wound an @LVMPD officer this week. 1/
That's because in 2015, the Legislature took away local governments' ability to regulate firearms. 2/
Last year, Assemblywoman @sandra4nv, a #1October survivor and fierce advocate, pushed to restore local governments’ powers (AB291). 3/
I and others testified in support of AB291, specifically citing the possibility that, for safety reasons, there may be times when the County would need to temporarily restrict firearms on the Strip. 4/
@LVMPD’s lobbyist testified that Metro had concerns that if the County Commission had the power to restrict firearms, we might “push an extreme agenda.” Some labor unions and Strip casinos also expressed concern that we might lose a trade show. 5/
While AB291 passed the State Assembly, the State Senate stripped out the language restoring local governments' powers. 6/
With an officer in the hospital and large-scale protests coinciding with reopening Strip resorts, temporarily restricting firearms on the Strip doesn’t seem so “extreme” right now. 7/
I hope lobbyists for @LVMPD, labor unions, Strip casinos and certain legislators won’t forget that in the next legislative session. 8/8
