We remember the case of botanist Leonard Co who, together with Julius Borromeo and Sofronio Cortez, was brutally murdered by the military in Kananga, Leyte in 2010 on suspicions of being New People’s Army rebels. (2/6)
Meanwhile, AGHAM member and physicist Kim Gargar, who was conducting a research mission for typhoon Pablo rehabilitation efforts when he was wrongfully arrested and presented as an “NPA rebel,” was incarcerated for 10 months before being released on bail. (3/6)
It is too obvious that branding individuals and organizations as “terrorists,” “rebels,” or their sympathizers becomes a go-to excuse to justify state-sponsored terrorism against the very people it is mandated to protect. (4/6)
