(thread) Please do not use the upskirting law, a law I tirelessly fought to create that protects all genders, as fodder for an anti-trans narrative.
dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8…
Voyeurism and the upskirting law was used here whilst putting across a case that M&S allowing trans or non-binary people to use changing rooms for which they identify is dangerous for women. The law was quoted as 'calling this in to question'.
1. The upskirting law is different to voyeurism in that it was created specifically to fill the gaps where you can't use voyeurism (you can only use voyeurism in a place with reasonable expectation of privacy) I.e: changing room. So, you don't even need to mention my law at all.
2. In each state/country that has passed anti-discrimination laws allowing trans/GNC people to self identify there has been no trend or rise in cases. In fact, research shows trans people are actually denied access, assaulted/verbally attacked in public bathrooms (and generally).
3. Historically, bathroom fears have been regularly deployed against civil rights causes; against black people to justify segregation. Against gay people. To stop the Equal Rights Amendment. Yet unisex bathrooms exist everywhere with no issue and changing rooms are safe spaces.
The arguments against M&S policy were, that a woman and child had to 'stand behind a man who was holding bras to try on'. Doing absolutely nothing wrong then. Hurting noone. Use that moment to teach your kid that people exist and express differently and your body is your choice.
The few trans/non-binary people who feel brave enough to ask to use a space they're comfortable in should be allowed to do so. They are hurting no one.

Focus on who's actually perpetrating this crime & don't use my work to further a narrative I have never wanted to be a part of.
