When we marched for democracy in Russia, we were always outnumbered by riot police lining the streets and often instigating violence. Security forces brought in from other cities were more likely to feel free to harm protesters.
Looting and other criminal exploitation of legitimate protest must be condemned and responded to, but that is and must always be for civilian government accountable to the citizens affected and democratic oversight.

Meanwhile in Russia, a man was shot to death in his home by police for stealing some wallpaper; a massive oil leak in the Arctic Circle, and new laws to make voting (that is, cheating) easier in Moscow.
The joke going around is that you now need ID to take a walk in Moscow but no ID to vote, even online!
Covid-19 restrictions are of course being abused to crack down protests as Putin pushes ahead with his sham referendum to change the constitution and stay in power forever. The measure doesn't even specify what the changes are, just yes or no.

Sounds familiar.
My deja vu aside, this breaks the chain of command & accountability, a hallmark of Trump and every autocrat. Law enforcement and politicians are supposed to serve the public in a democracy. Transparency is vital from top to bottom.
The phrase "Papers, citizen!" is correctly associated with authoritarianism. In a democracy, the people should be able to demand the "papers" of anyone working for the government. It's theirs.
