I don’t think the American empire (or really any empire) is capable of this level of reform. To put it another way, it will break down due to its internal contradictions before it sacrifices something to account for them.
The problem is, we don’t know what the breakdown of the American order will look like, and it could be extremely nasty...
Whatever you want to say about the American order, it is an order. It allows us to live relatively happily and safely. We should respect its power—if we confront it directly, we’ll be crushed—but we shouldn’t believe that it’s eternal, or even, at this point, long for this world.
