There is this idea that intense criticism must mean you are doing something right. Rather than self-reflect, you self-congratulate. Eddie Glaude brags that right and left attack him. The NYTimes congratulate themselves for amplifying fascism. It is so brave!
This prevents them from actually considering the critique at all. It excuses all matter of sins from advocating against voting for president in Glaude's case or giving a bullhorn to a fascist with the New York Times. They don't have to consider whether they were right to do so
Not if they can wrap criticism around them as a claim of how brave they are. How they speak the truth and are punished for it. But they ignore the actual criticism. They refuse to consider the possibility of error and there is no punishment.
The New York Times Editor who okayed that op-ed still has a job. Eddie Glaude is still a professor and still is the official voice of Black people on MSNBC even though he told Black people not to vote in 2016.
