It's big. If you add in the countries setting #netzero targets as part of the Climate Ambition Alliance, you get over half of global GDP, 23% of global emissions, and 2.6 billion people. 2/n

There have been A LOT of net zero targets put forward recently. As we've written, some are better than others. independent.co.uk/voices/climate… 3/n

What's different about the #RacetoZero is that it has standards. Over last 2 months we at @UniofOxford convened actors setting net-zero targets & scientific experts to discuss what standards should apply. This collaboration led to the "starting line:" unfccc.int/sites/default/… 4/n

We also produced a mapping of how different kinds of actors and networks are approaching net zero. There is a lot of convergence, but also plenty of divergence and open questions. A lot more to figure out as we run this #RacetoZero

More broadly #RacetoZero is a fascinating evolution of "orchestration" as governance. @COP25CL @COP26 @UNFCCC are using convening power to leverage action from sub- non-state actors on a much larger scale. As UN process shifts to implementation > negotiation, this will be key 6/n

Finally, why do this now? Why launch #RacetoZero during a pandemic and why, for us Americans, at a critical juncture in the struggle for racial justice? For me the answer is simple. We will NOT have health, or justice, or anything we value in a world of runaway climate change 7/7
