Today I watched a masterclass on leadership presented by the iconic, enigmatic Anna Wintour, Creative Director of Condé Nast publications, former Editor of Vogue. This winner of the CFDA said “Anna is a nice person. Your movie (The Devil Wears Prada) did not do her justice.”
Her timeless leadership lessons have been garnered over a 30+ year career as a journalist, editor of a publication & activist in one of the most fickle industries of all - fashion. Her story is a testament of creativity, courage, tenacity and building relationships.
My favourite. It took me more than 10 years to learn that. Be clear about the kinds of people you can work with. Choose to work for a leader who will challenge you, push you but support you when it counts the most. When the time comes, leave with gratitude & grace.
Great advice to build any careers. Great things take time. Exercise patience. Too many of us compare ourselves with others. Everyone is on their own path. Stay true to your vision. Passion, conviction & love for what you do will attract the right people & opportunities.
“Always act with clarity and conviction. Stay true to your own vision. That is what a leader does.” Anna Wintour
How to be distinctive, create magic & make your mark.
Some of the most impressive Vogue images. An exercise in bold creativity. They tell a story, take the reader on a voyage & imaginary trip. Show people what they haven’t seen.
How they create some of the Vogue magic. Images that tell a story and show the reader something they haven’t seen before.
Find new ways to connect with your audience. Recognize when something’s not working. Own your decisions & move on. The Facebook success story is rare. Few people succeed in building a company straight out of college. Chris Bailey at Burberry & Michael Kors are living examples.
When things are dark, it’s better to be engaged & positive & help, rather than just sitting back and giving up. This was true after 9/11. It’s true now even for COVID-19.
Conclusion: lead from the heart. Be fearless. Exercise creative judgement. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Learn from observing the world around you.

I see now why Vogue remains at the cutting edge of the fashion industry. So inspiring.
