Now more than ever, we need to be more careful, attentive & present in our children's lives. We need to instill in our children values that can help this country and the world at large be better. The problems we face in the country such as corruption & graft stem from parenting.
We need to emphasize values such as empathy, kindness and respect for every human being regardless of who or what they are. Empathy alone can help fight corruption and graft as people will, e.g, feel for patients in Cancer Institute before they steal funds meant for the hospital.
Our parents focused, unnecessarily, so much on respect — respect for elders and those in authority. This has led to the situation we have in this country: children are abused by elders and can't say come out because they respect their word of not saying anything.
Government officials keep using public funds for their selfish benefits, when they're are sure they won't be caught to have their reputation tarnished. Imagine, if instead they felt for the end user or beneficiary of that money (empathy at work), they wouldn't misuse that money.
Imagine a nation where people were kinder and more compassionate. See the police brutality in this country!? Dictators would struggle getting officers willing to use violence against their fellow brothers and sisters. Cases of rape, GBV, nepotism cyber bulling etc would be lower.
Imagine if respect was instilled in the young in a different way — not just for the elders and those in authority but for every human being. We wouldn't be having people in powerful positions under-looking upon and treating those lower than them in the hierarchy like trash.
But we keep thinking that tougher laws will fix our problems, No. We're not going to see the end of 'large-scale' corruption in our time. So, why focus our resources on legislation which we know is not gonna help? Some1 will always break the law if they're sure no one's watching.
Recommendation: let's spend more time doing something that's gonna help create a better Uganda and world for the generations to come. Let's spend more time with our children, guiding them, imparting in them skills and values that can help improve this lovely country and earth.
I can't fully exhaust this issue just now, but think about it. Think about the values you want your children to grow up with. Imagine your child faced with a decision to either steal and be rich forever, or make money genuinely.
What would you want them to do? Instill in the child, values that you think can help them make the morally right decision when privately faced with such conflicting situations.
