Want to investigate the police but don't know how to start? Use the same techniques as investigative journalists to access public records.

Here are some tips to hold law enforcement accountable & examine police conduct 👇
You are entitled to public records that can show whether rules are being followed. Get them.
If you’re scrutinizing the type of misconduct we saw in Minneapolis, you could request use of force reports. Here’s what you might ask for.
If you’re looking for video from police body cameras or want to obtain recordings of 911 calls, @rcfp has guides for where that information is public.

Remember that the rules governing police conduct in your area may be inconsistent with best practices elsewhere.
To get policy information, you may need to request rules set by a county or state authority. Ask for written copies. You might be required to file a formal public records request.
Sometimes it’s hard to even know which records exist. That’s where documents known as “records retention schedules” come in handy.
