Ancient Coin of the Day: A really intriguing tetradrachm, struck at Pergamum (ca. 145 BC), with the Reverse depicting the 'Divine Syrian Cabeiri', a pair of male deities who were the subject of a Mystery Cult. #ACOTD #Cult

The Obverse, bearing a portrait of Demeter, is not that unusual, but the celebration of a religious cult on the Reverse - and a relatively obscure one - makes this an interesting artefact - to me anyway!
Apollonius of Rhodes, in the 'Argonautica' (1.910-921), has the Argonauts become initiates of the cult of the Cabeiri, an episode which Valerius Flaccus in his Latin version of the story expands.
Cicero (De Nat. Deor. I.42) informs us that the rites of the Lemnian Cabeiria - the festival celebrating these deities - lasted for nine days, during which fires on the island were extinguished and offerings were made to the dead.
