WFH and distance education over zoom should have convinced most parents about how their money is wasted on schools. But there is no alternative.
Most schools, no matter how reputed, are essentially quite same.
Other than one or two ideas propagated by management , there is no REAL difference among them.
Literacy, Numeracy and some socialization are real benefits of organised education system. It is not education, it is literacy.
Schools/teachers/management have no chance of change in rotten boards driven system.
For 99.99% there is no viable and affordable alternative for their children.
So how to make sure that -
1. Bad schools don't damage our kids
2. Kids get interesting education
Don't look for a great school unless you have decent money and balls or ovaries of steel. Non conventional school are great but require lot of patience and involvement from parents. Getting along with "non conventional" management can also be challenge for many parents.
Key issue is time. Time consumed by school is directly related to damage it can cause to your child.

So a school that is walking distance from your house and runs in two shifts could be your best bet.
Two shift schools free up large chunk of the day for children (childcare could be tricky)
Other than basic performance in school, don't waste time, money and effort on tuitions.
Let child learn more about their interests via real life trainings or internet.
It gives huge bonuses in long run by widening their horizons and generating genuine interest in self learning.
Spend money on learning opportunities. Not on tuitions and marks enhancing machinery.

Staying under the radar in school can actually help kids.
So actively engage in education while giving lip service to machinery of literacy i.e. formal school.
Declaration of interest - i shifted my kids to a mediocre school from a fancy one early on. Their school lived up to the promise by not offering much.
No tuitions unless they specifically beg for it for months. Lot of extra curricular stuff as they followed their varied interests
Unfortunately two shift school wasn't available nearby.

Older kid ultimately chose law as her career against all pressure from school teachers (parents supported her wholeheartedly)
Younger one has her heart set on piano (for now).

Let's see how this pans out :)
