Many are happy with Minneapolis announcing it is working to abolish the MPD. On the surface this seems like everything us abolitionists could want, and there is no doubt some valuable reforms will be made. However this isn't abolition and it is dangerous to treat it as such.
We recognize how state violence is inherently linked to hierarchies such as white supremacy & capitalism. Hierarchies require violence/the threat of violence to function, & history has shown that the groups at the top of hierarchies have *never* voluntarily given up their power.
Any new system implemented in our current society by the bourgeois state will inevitably resemble that of the old. Slavery still exists despite the 13th amendment, segregation still exists despite the civil rights acts. Why should we expect different from the police?
The only way to win a world without police, prisons, borders, etc. is to destroy the oppressive systems which we are currently caught in. We must continue the fight against the state, imperialism, capitalism, white supremacy, patriarchy, and so on if we ever want to be free.
Do not fall for the piecemeal reforms. These don't address the root of the problems, and are only implemented to pacify resistance. Once that happens, the reforms are eventually repealed and we return to more or less the same place.
We must break this cycle and dare to engage in revolutionary struggle if we are to hope for a better world to live in. 🏴❤️
