OK, so at the risk of appearing insane, I'm sharing dozens of implicitly and explicitly racist tweets and retweets (mostly retweets) from @NickSzabo4 over the last two years. First, an explanation...
A couple years back, when I was working full-time as a cryptocurrency journalist, I noticed Nick Szabo retweeting a lot of white supremacist content (as well as generic far-right stuff.) I mentioned this to a few people and they were surprised—Nick's racism was news to them
Got me thinking—what if Satoshi were a white supremacist and no one knows it? How crazy would that be?? (Not so crazy actually, but worth being aware of.) And even if he's not Satoshi, he's still a thought leader in the space—because of his work but also because people admire him
Please don't misunderstand me: when I say that his prominence in the crypto space reveals the space's tolerance for race hate, I don't mean "all people who like Nick are bad." What I mean is that his hate was hiding in plain sight, and...
..the fact that so many people apparently missed it speaks to a need for more critical thinking in this space. This is a wake-up call: let's stop being taken in by charismatic people who are inspired/inspiring. Let's instead use our critical faculties to evaluate all info+claims
But I digress—in 2018, when I was writing about white supremacist undercurrents in crypto, I cited some Szabo retweets (and tweets by others.) Seeing how he raged against the use of "Nazi" to describe modern racists, I thought, "this guy really doesn't own his racism."
I worried that some day I'd be challenged to back up my assertion that Nick is a white supremacist, so I continued screencapping his tweets, retweets and likes of white supremacist content. It became a habit
Two years later, I'm sitting on an embarrassingly large trove of photos, and as people are talking about what a racist dumbass Nick is, I'm feeling stupid that I continued to take screenshots for as long as I did. But I've decided to share them, because taken as a whole...
...these sentiments are *yet another* testament to the absurd irrationality of hate, and in a space where people celebrate human logic + rationality (and let's be real, we often trumpet our own brilliance the loudest) this incongruity between ideal/reality must be reckoned with.
The American people are rising up to try and prevent our racist past and present from continuing to infect our future.  It's a perfect time for the crypto space to reckon with the same fundamental question: do we ultimately stand for hate and ethnonationalism, or against them?
I hesitated to write this thread because in publishing it, I'm feeding directly into cancel culture, which just might be my generation's worst invention. So let me end this rant by saying that...
...I'm a big fan of the dictum "attack the idea, not the person." I don't want to suggest that it's impossible for ANYONE to change and grow. If Nick is able to deal with his shit and overcome, his growth SHOULD be recognized. But for now, I say fuck him:
...the men and women in this space are building a technology that might be used by billions one day, and if we can't all take a stand against white supremacy at this critical juncture, then trust me, we're gonna fuck this up. Badly.
Plenty of tweets on the trope that people of color are violent
Tweets about how immigrants are dangerous
On the white supremacist talking points of 'white genocide' and 'demographic decline'
'White genocide' and 'The Family'
'White culture' under attack
Praise for 'white culture'
Misc.
Tidbit: an archaeologist friend said it's become clear that people of European descent have more Neanderthal DNA than others (I may be misstating the precise fact but that's the basic idea) and that some white supremacists are now stanning all things neanderthal. Pretty funny imo
I've got more, but twitter is cutting me off and honestly I think it's for the best
Son of a bitch blocked me before I could unfollow him! How dare you deny me that pleasure, you small small man, after two years of me thirsting for it?
