If, like me, you are a parent raising white children in America, then in my personal opinion, it is incredibly important for you to talk to your children about race, racism, and prejudice. 1/7
When my kids were born, I naively hoped they would grow up in a world where they didn't see prejudice. Maybe we can get there, but we just aren't there yet. I now understand that not talking to your kids about racism & prejudice is a privilege, specifically a white privilege. 2/7
Parents of black & brown children in America don't have the luxury of not talking to their kids about racism. They have to teach their children about the realities of racism just to navigate their way through life in a country that has institutionalized racism in so many ways 3/7
Many white people mistakenly believe that not personally being racist is enough, but that isn't true. Not being prejudiced in your heart is obviously necessary, but it doesn't deconstruct centuries of institutionalized racism that is tragically embedded deeply into society 4/7
At this point, it is the duty of white people not only to not be racist, but also to be actively anti-racist. We have to tear down the barriers to black people and the racist systems that have been in place for so long that most people just take them for granted. 5/7
The only way to be actively anti-racist is to be aware of the history & current realities of racism that pervade our country.
That's why we have to first listen to our black sisters & brothers about their experiences & about how to move forward. We have to follow their lead 6/7
And we must have hard conversations with other white people about the current realities of racism, and pass all these lessons along to our kids. Maybe one day children in America can grow up and not see racism. But we aren't there yet. And we have work to do #blacklivesmatter 7/7
