EXCLUSIVE: Despite having a fully staffed county communications team and a budget crisis, L.A. County has increased the amount it's paying to two PR firms for #COVID19 messaging to $1.9 million, including funding for recruiting "celebrity influencers." bit.ly/2BPWJQl
A consultant for one of the PR firms, Mercury Public Affairs, made a maximum political donation to Supervisor Kathryn Barger the month before the no-bid contract was approved. The CEO of the other firm, Fraser Communications, settled with the SEC for $91,530 for insider trading.
When I last reported these contracts in April, the PR firms were being paid a total of $400,000. The county is now spending nearly 5x that amount for this #coronavirus messaging. I got comments from the county, and its critics, and I'll be live at 10pm on @FOXLA w/ story tonight.

The LA city council voted today to identify any hotels refusing to house the homeless via Project Roomkey & investigate any city tax breaks they’ve gotten in the past. Councilman Bonin suggested these hotels are violating civil rights, and suggested “commandeering” them. @FOXLA
The homeowners association at the Ritz Carlton is pushing back. Hundreds of people pay millions of $$ to live in the 224 condo units on the residence side of the hotel, and they fear there will be security and health issues if hundreds of homeless are brought in. 10pm @FOXLA

Under California's new $0 cash bail rules, child abusers are now eligible for immediate release. San Bernardino County Sheriff @sheriffmcmahon tells me he had to release a felony child abuse suspect /w priors for domestic violence & child abuse immediately after arrest. @FOXLA
California's Judicial Council carved out 13 exemptions for the $0 cash bail, including serious and violent felonies, and while domestic violence made the list, child abuse inexplicably did not. How does that happen? I press the Council for answers, story 2nite at 10pm on @FOXLA
On top of this, the Sheriff tells me the mandate is forcing him to release hundreds of inmates, including some with serious previous felony convictions. A prosecutor told me today re: rule, "You spit on your wife, you go to jail, you give your kid a black eye, you're free to go."
