How long does it take for the @EPP to decide that they’re for democracy and not authoritarianism? They’ve been dithering for years on such a fundamental question? Seriously? Just #ExpelFidesz already.
Note, former Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel was a member of the 3-man panel. He’s best known for twice forming coalition governments with the hate-mongering, far-right Freedom Party. No way the panel would ever do anything but give a pass to hate-mongering, far-right Orbán
The other thing that tells you the @EPP’s “wise men” panel was never anything more than whitewash job is this: Orbán got to pick his own judges...
And yes, I understand the @EPP may block me again - as they did a while back - for pointing all this out. They’re terrible at dealing with legitimate criticism, just as they’re terrible at understanding fundamental democratic values.
And what‘s up with @donaldtuskEPP? He clearly knows he’s helping a monster: a month or two ago, he said an infamous Nazi legal expert would be “proud” of Orbán. Yet Tusk absurdly remains the head of the alliance that includes Orbán’s Fidesz. 🤔
I mean, maybe it’s just me, but when I compare people to Nazis, I don’t then keep hanging out with them.
Another day, another outrage from Hungary’s ruling party...
✅ Condemned 7/10 killings by Palestinian armed groups;
✅ Questioned legality of some Israeli airstrikes;
✅ Condemned Israel's collective punishment of Palestinians & called for targeted sanctions on those responsible;

Belgium has also:
✅ Expressed support for the International Criminal Court’s role and its ongoing investigation on the situation in Palestine, which includes jurisdiction over the current hostilities between the Israeli government and Palestinian armed groups.

In addition, the Belgian federal parliament has introduced a bill to ban trade with settlements in occupied territories.

Convincing people that they have fundamental rights takes no effort at all.
Convincing them that others have fundamental rights is the hard part.
I want to write about these things in ways that might encourage new people to warm to the idea of universal human rights.
I don’t feel you can do that by using language and tropes that immediately spark “culture war” reactions - those cliché phrases that close minds instantly.
That’s been the purpose of my newsletter over the past year: to find language that brings people closer to understanding the fundamental rights that bind us together.
