On Monday, Immigration Minister @CPhilpOfficial defended the decision to increase Asylum Support by just 26p per day, keeping it under £40 per week, after 12 weeks of deliberation in a deadly pandemic.

Well, we’ve done some calculations of our own...

This is a picture of an item of the same value as the daily increase in Asylum Support.

We’re not trying to be funny – this is beyond a joke. A Freddo is genuinely one of the very few things you can buy for 26 pence.
Here are some other things that people seeking asylum could afford with 26p. Half a Bramley apple in Tesco, a third of a first-class stamp and half a pint of milk in ASDA.
This “increase” in Asylum Support is in response to the coronavirus crisis, which is causing us all to spend money staying safe. These face masks (single-use) are the cheapest we could find. You’d need to save up 26p per day for almost 4 months to afford them.
26 pence amounts to LESS THAN TWO MINUTES work at the national minimum wage for people over 25 (people seeking asylum are banned from working by the way).
The Home Office’s methodology is based on specific retailers including Primark, Poundworld and Superdrug.

There’s a problem with pointing to these outlets during an unprecedented pandemic: most have been shut for months.
A 26 pence increase. To £5.66 per day. Less than £40 per week. It’s an insult, not an increase.

Is this the Government’s idea of the funding people seeking asylum ‘need and deserve’?

It's people like Catherine that have to deal with the consequences of this decision.
