1. It's easy to attack & deride Trump for his vile attacks on Martin Gugino as an "ANTIFA provocateur." But Trump's not the only one engaged in absurd threat inflation & conspiracy theories. Consider @jonathanchait
2. It can't be underscored enough that the whole Antifa narrative in the uprising is a bullshit story. Trump has given the FBI, DOJ & police every incentive to find an Antifa connection and they got bupkis. My colleague @kenklippenstein worth reading on this.

4. The antifa-as-bogeyman is part of a larger effort by Trump & also some liberals to revive the "outsider agitator" trope. That trope has historically been used to deny the reality of black suffering & to delegitimize protests. It's disgusting. More here: thenation.com/article/societ…

1. What the hell is happening at the New York Times? I think the larger crisis, going well beyond the argument over the Cotton op ed, is the crack-up of the elite consensus that dominated from 1939 until 1991 (and had a strong afterlife until around 2014).
2. The Times, along with other elite media, has long practiced a highly specialized form of objectivity (or rather, faux-objectivity): both-sidesism. Based on the narrow USA 2-party system, idea is that neutrality means giving articulation to competing elites (Dem & GOP).
3. Faux-objectivity & both-sidesism always ran into problems with politics expanded beyond elite quarrels and started to include the broader public (as in the 1960s and in our current age of protests).

1. It's been a hard week and will not stop getting harder. So I wanted to share something that might bring a smile: Little Lulu, Class Warrior. From Little Lulu #16 (Oct. 1949). Set up: Lulu meets a spoiled rich boy who mistreats her.
2. When Lulu protests, rich kid sets his dog after her. Then out of stupidity he gets his head trapped inside gates of his mansion.
3. Lulu goes to get help. But she sure takes her time.

I posted this yesterday but I keep thinking about how William Randolph Hearst wanted to Hitler to write columns. There was some worry that Hitler might want the same word rate as another Hearst regular, Benito Mussolini.
