The key is:

1. Pick a big market (example: Graphic design)
2. Pick a niche (example: Marketers at startups with 10-25 employees)
Big market = Proven demand

There is no market risk. People need your service. The only risk is execution... which comes to my second point.
Pick a niche = Better positioning and stand out from the position

Example: Creating websites for dentists? You’ll know the exact problems they face and the goals they want to achieve.

Also, easier to stand out from the competition.
You don’t need many customers to build a decent income selling services to a niche.

$10,000/mo:

* 10 customers at $1000/mo
* 20 customers at $500/mo
* 50 customers at $200/mo
* 100 customers at $100/mo
My advice to get those first 100 customers:

1. Create a landing page with your service offering
2. Create case studies / add social proof
3. Add a payment form (you can use ManyRequests for this — Disclaimer: I run it)
4. Do outreach only to get your first 50-100 customers
