Two charts that explain why the US military is uncongenial territory for Trumpism.

1) The force as a whole depends heavily on the contributions of ethnic minorities
2) The officer corps is very highly education: 4 in 10 active duty officers have an advanced degree beyond a BA
Highly educated elites in a context of rising ethnic diversity: the US military looks a lot like the dynamic knowledge centers at the core of the US economy.
One more observation: while African Americans are under-represented in the highest military ranks, they are probably less under-represented than at the top of other important institutions. Of the military's general/flag officers, more than 8% are black fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec…

The Trump campaign decision to bump its Tulsa rally from June 19 to June 20 is so fascinatingly revealing ... 1/x
1) Those who complained about the June 19 rally date were complaining that there was something inconsistent about a Trump rally on an anniversary of Emancipation. You wouldn't expect Trump to agree to that - but he did!
2) Why would a presidency that never admits error, never accepts responsibility, never apologizes for anything - why would it back down in the face of complaints about a June 19 event?

To abridge the argument made in Trumpocalypse:

Some of Trump's poor standing among military officers obviously due to education. The service with the most PhDs is the Air Force, and that's the service where Trump polls worst with the officer corps.

But ...
Remember that in every branch of the military, cohesion among troops of different backgrounds is regarded by officers as mission-critical.

Trump's divisive leadership is perceived by many officers as a direct threat to military effectiveness.

Hence the majority disapproval
By the way, in the Military Times poll in 2017, James Mattis' approval rating among troops of all ranks was FORTY POINTS higher than President Trump's.

Mattis' condemnation of Trump truly does matter. As does Powell's.
