Sheikh Mujib:
Sheikh Mujib was the political leader of Bangladesh and widely regarded as the father of Bangladesh.

The middle class pushed back which led to serious law and order problems which prompted Mujib to impose emergency in December 1974. He amended the constitution, declared himself president and instituted a one party state as well as creating a personal security group.
On August 15th 1975, 4 army officers entered his residence and assassinated his entire family except his 2 daughters who were in the US. It is said his entire body twisted with the impact of the bullet.

After the coup, all 4 political leaders were thrown in Jail. They met their fate by a secret plan when they were made subject to automatic fire from close range in their cells, expiring all of them with a very agonising death. [2]

President Zia ur Rehman:
He was the next president after Mujib and was killed by a section of
his own mutinous army in May 1981.
It is said he was killed in the very city where he had declared independence from Pakistan in 1971, in the very same circuit house. [3]

Indira Gandhi:
Severely acclaimed to have been responsible for the Breakup of Pakistan as well as being very boastful of this fact, India’s Iron Lady was attacked by her Sikh bodyguards opening fire on her for the Anti Sikh happenings of 1984. [4]

Beant Singh is said to have fired 3 shotgun shots into her abdomen whereas Sawant Singh emptied all 30 rounds of his sub machine gun in her body.

Her son Sanjay Gandhi died in a mysterious plane crash. Her other son, Rajiv Gandhi died at the hands of Tamil Militants. [6]

Bhutto is also attributed to have played a gigantic role in the breakup. He was hung by the dictator Zia Ul Haq after his coup. Interestingly, Ishtiaq Ahmed states in his book that the hanging of Bhutto wasnt pre - decided

It was Bhutto’s massive rallies and support after being initially released after the coup on 29th July that forced Zia to take action. [7]
In any terms, the happenings of 1971 are certainly a blot on the history of Pakistan. Much of it still remains shrouded under mystery but all one can deduce from it is to wish for Pakistan to always remain standing tall and well wishes to our friends in Bangladesh.

On a personal note, this story always sends chills down my spine considering it wasn’t just limited to them. Bhutto, Gandhi and Mujib’s families met the same fate as them. It was almost as if they had a curse on all of them. Indira Gandhi used to say “they won’t spare me now”.
