St Luke's in Milland, Sussex is known as the church in the woods. It sits in a clearing softly dappled with sunlight and cloaked in tall trees of many greens. As you approach, wild chamomile is crushed underfoot releasing heady fragrance.

St Luke's has been the 'old church' ever since a Victorian replacement was built next door in 1880.

The first reference to St Luke's, also known as Tuxlith Chapel, is in a will dated 1532, when Isabel Colpece left “ii shepe to the Church of Tyklyth”.

However, a blocked 12th-century window discovered during conservation work several years ago revealed that the church has much older origins. This, together with herringbone masonry discovered under render on the north wall, points to a date within the Norman period.
