/8 Green bean production. Green beans are an important crop for both the fresh and processing markets. For the fresh market segment uniformity, quality and general appearance are among the most important factors. For the processing market harvestability, a concentrated fruit set
/8 and recovery play the most important roles. Some of these traits can be obtained by variety selection but a lot still depends on management and good farming practice. To achieve the desired result from a bean crop some basic steps must be followed to ensure that best yield
/8 and quality are obtained. As with any crop the need for soil analysis is of utmost importance. Plant population and spacing, Green beans are planted at a rate of 250-350 000 seeds per ha. Row width, irrigation type and time of sowing will determine the final target population
/8 The average final population is usually 250-280 000 seeds per ha. Depending on seed size there are 3500-4000 seeds/kg. Seed rate therefore varies between 60-100kg.Interrow spacing can vary from 45 to 90cm or more between rows. The most popular row spacing with smaller
/8 plantings and handpicked crops is double rows spaced 45cm apart with a walkway of 75-90cm between the pickers to work in. Seed should be planted at a depth of 15-30mm. Irrigation. As with fertilizer water requirements of the bean plant are crucial to achieving maximum yields.
/8 The greatest need for water is during the flowering and pod set stages. Depending on the prevailing climatic conditions and soil type the water requirement of a bean crop can vary considerably. For planning purposes 200-300mm of water may be needed per growing season.
/8 The following can be used as practical guideline. Establishment:25-35mm keep soil moist for first 10-15 days. Vegetative growth:15-25mm weekly. Flowering to Harvest:25-35mm weekly. Over irrigation should be avoided as this adversely affects development and leads to increased
/8 disease incidence. Varieties to grow Star 2053(Local market) Star 2054 for export market.
