I am all in @RoamResearch This is the biggest software purchase I have made yet. Here are my reasons why. #roamcult 
First impressions of Roam, remains unchanged
Innovation: There are no other alternatives that replicate all the features of Roam that suite me now. I am sure many would catch up. But I believe the current features are just the beginning.
The roam team isn't being afraid to be exploratory. Hackish themeing, kanban, diagram all show that. For some it would be jarring to use unpolished UI on paid software. But I have a higher degree of tolerance of form when function is right.
This isn't even by the core team, Which shows how well their underlying data-structures are designed. "Bad programmers worry about the code. Good programmers worry about data structures and their relationships. Torvalds, Linus (2006-06-27)."
Roam is a tool built truly for those who hack/tinker. Not built for the least common denominator. Most SaaS products in the name of simplicity dilute themselves. This refreshing difference can't be made by those without a headstrong vision &/or constrained too much by VCs
There is no absolute guarantee that @Conaw and team wouldn't sell the startup. But they working on this project for a few years by getting money from AI researchers when VCs didn't bet on it, has convinced me that they're in for the long-term, shows skin in the game.
Serendipity: Might be an appeal to Synchronicity. I work in AI and this app was partly funded by AI researchers for their note-taking needs. I wanted to work on tech for local democracy before and was surprised to see that it informs roam's design
I also want dibs on Roam Shares when its takes community funding.
Only time will tell whether my reasoning of benefit over the cost is correct.
