#iNaturalist uses Wikipedia content to describe taxa. So if a Wikipedia article does not exist, a template is given. This template can be used to create that Wikipedia article.
I created a stub on Wikipedia. These are the steps.
1. I check #Wikidata to see if this species is described on any of the other language editions of Wikipedia. It is. H
3. There are enough photos to reuse in articles, but if there are not, I check #iNaturalist for photo's to reuse, which is possible by pushing the "iNaturalist button"
3.a. This button needs to be enabled to work, it is not installed by default. It is a user script. Instructions on how to install this: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Kald…
3.b. Many observations in #iNaturalist use reuse licenses that do not allow reuse on Wikipedia. Fortunately, many iNaturalists use licenses which do allow that. The iNaturalist user script selects those observations.
4. Next is the search for reliable scientific articles on the taxa under scrutiny. I usually primarily focus on PubMed to generate a stub as a starting point, but other indexers such as #GBIF or Google Scholar, are equally viable sources. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17004007/?from…
5.a A PubMed search resulted in a single hit: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17004007/?from…. Unfortunately, it is behind a paywall so other sources for information are needed. I am not going to pay 42 Euro, to write a Wikipedia article.
6. With a selection of photos and a peer-reviewed article at hand, I start writing the Wikipedia article by copying the template provided by iNaturalist.
7.a. I add the selected image to the species box
7.b by adding it as follows:
7.c. A quick check to see if that renders well.
7.d. From the retrieved article and the #GBIF record I derived a very short stub, containing a very short description, its range and its habitat
7.e. Finally I add the taxon bar which creates a footer containing various external identifiers to resources with structured knowledge on the topic. {{Taxonbar|from=Q15606811}}
8. That is it, after a final inspection by pushing the Show Preview button again, I push "Publish page" and the stub is a fact.
9. This beetle was already described in other language wikipedia's. So a final step is to add links to these language versions. Which is done by clicking on "add link" under the languages section in the left panel
Now the stub is ready with links to other language wikipedia's
This is my workflow to get knowledge from #iNaturalist, through the scientific literature and #GBIF to Wikipedia. Please scrutinize and tell me yours.
