To say Confederates fought for the South is an insult and an outright lie. Four million black people lived in the South and Confederates weren’t fighting for them. Confederates took up arms AGAINST the United States, and then we named US military bases after these traitors.
How many military bases are named after the black soldiers who saved the Union when white recruits started having draft riots and refusing to enlist? Did black Americans consider naming bases after the people who fought to keep their ancestors enslaved a sign of respect?
When you say reconciliation, you mean the re-instatement of white rule in the South and that white Americans reunified over white supremacy and the ongoing subjugation of black Americans. So, doesn’t really seem like it’s the erasure of history that’s the concern.
The South, by the way, doesn’t equal white.
