Some thoughts about the small-scale damaging winds in parts of eastern #Luxembourg last Friday (gust of 119 km/h measured in Grevenmacher between 17:40 and 17:50 UTC). Feel free to comment @pgroenemeijer @Djpuco @BramvantVeen!

Some measurements of the weather station located in the western part of Grevenmacher are shown below (source: kachelmannwetter.com/de/messwerte/g…). The relative humidity was relatively low (around 40 %) before the strong winds hit the station. Temperature dropped by about 10 °C afterwards.
Here the radar imagery for the approximate time when winds started to intensify in the area of Grevenmacher. In my opinion, it seems more likely that the small convective cell near the German border to the east of the hailstorm produced a microburst, ...
... since the cold pool boundary of the hailstorm was already too far north according to the low-level velocity data and the weather station measured southerly winds between 17:40 and 17:50 UTC. The mesocyclone of the hailstorm was also located too far west.
The COVID-19 test station, which was severely damaged by the microburst, is marked by the green circle; the weather station is denoted by the thick red point (source: @geoportail_lu).
