The Dutch love messing about in boats. Apparently they even swim (it will never catch on)
I love the surviving old boozers. De Port van Cleve is where many of my evenings have begun
At night the city takes on a magical quality - you just point a camera & shoot...
Certain parts of the city become important to me to visit each time. There’s the kiosk at De Spui, saying hello to a lion in the small hours & possibly the world’s most beautiful bookshop
Amsterdam is a city to be walked (although with cyclists you are taking your life in your hands).
The low humidity levels relative to Ireland mean that shots have a crystal clarity that is beguiling
This view of the harbourage on the Old Side of Amsterdam was taken after one of the greatest all nighters. Fortunately I had my full frame with me. Note the Christmas trees!
No trip is complete with a day or two spent in the Rijksmuseum. This ballet of gestures by Rembrandt fascinates me. It’s one of humanity’s greatest works. And if you can get to the main museum you can see it’s changing display at Schiphol.
More light, more architecture. It’s a city of light & shadow
Another sight near the Westerkerk is the Homomonument. Only the Dutch could call it that! I find it particularly moving that they would build a memorial to the LGBTQI lives lost to the Holocaust & historic persecution
I’m not sure I’d want a cat wiping its ass on my apples. But a dusk voyage or a beer in a Utrecht bar is always enticing.
This is De Waag at Christmas.
It’s always good to take a break, read a paper or have some proper mint tea.
Maybe when the virus goes I’ll be able to go back & see the city again
