More testing doesn’t always mean more cases. Need to know % of positive tests — it tells you if you’re testing enough to track the disease. If you do 10,000 tests & 20% are positive, that’s 2,000 cases. If you do 20,000 tests but only 10% are positive, that’s still 2,000 cases.
To really track the disease, % positive cases should be low, indicating you’re probably testing enough to find a good fraction of the actual cases. If more testing were responsible for increases in cases, % positive rates would be going down.
In states like Arizona, Florida, and Texas, where cases are rising sharply right now, percent positive numbers are roughly steady or even rising. So it’s not the testing. It’s the spread.
