There is a habit among evangelical and Pentecostal academics of citing people like me as a pentecostal and an evangelical when they want to claim socio-political relevance. But I'm a die-hard protestant. I am not an evangelical or a pentecostal. This is how I know.

I don't worship white American theology.

I don't idolize the Bible and the Holy Spirit.

I JUDGE. Yes, I judge.

I don't forgive or pray for those in power. I condemn them for their sin, like the prophets did.

I'm don't idolize the Bible and think that everything one says must have a matching Bible verse.

I don't believe that we're all equal in the eyes of God. The poor, the meek, the orphan, the widow and the alien come first.

The rich might get to heaven if they go through the eye of a needle, which is unlikely.

I was a proud YES voter in the 2010 referendum. It's the only time my vote has been on the official winning side to date.

I believe that what Ezekiel Mutua does to artists is sinful and oppressive, and has nothing to do with morality. Or at least not biblical morality.

I love the comedy series Black Jesus, especially the episode where he steals from a church.

One of my favorite theologians is James Cone, who says that the cross is the lynching tree. If he was alive today, he would have said that the Cross is the American racist police and judicial system, and Jesus was George Floyd saying "I can't breathe."

Martin Luther King Jr speaks to my mind, and Malcolm X speaks to my heart.

I disagree with John S Mbiti who said we don't need a liberation or black theology.

I think Simon Kibangu, Elijah Masinde and other luminaries should be taught part of our faith.

Kenyan Christians need to do the work and distinguish us from one another. Hatuko pamoja hapa duniani. Labda tutakuwa pamoja mbunguni, but until then, we need to respect our lanes.
