Labour is using an Opposition Day Debate to ask Government to extend the free school meal scheme. Here is @BorisJohnson's response but does it tell the full story? THREAD
First, the Holiday Activities and Food Programme. This small programme runs every year. We are not aware any new money has been announced to recognise the millions of families now in crisis. And 50,000 children of the 1.3m who get FSMs is less than 4%. gov.uk/government/new…
Second, the £63m. It covers a period twice as long as the summer holidays and is half as much as the cost of the voucher scheme. It is not ringfenced for children, or food, and there is no guarantee Councils will deliver any of it to families (and reasons to think many will not).
Third, (although unsurprisingly Boris Johnson doesn't mention it in his amendment to Labour's motion) the Tories have quietly ditched the School Fruit and Vegetable scheme, making things even worse.
