Just over 80 years ago a threat of a very different kind was keeping families apart, yet pulling local communities together, all across Britain, just like today.

It’s time for another Doncaster Council history lesson.
In September 1940, the United Kingdom was at war against the Nazis.

This month marked a shift in the Nazi aerial war against Britain.

The bombing night raids began…
London was bombed for 57 consecutive nights from September 7.

Each morning, people would emerge from their homes, shelters and the underground to survey the damage.

The community would come together to search through the rubble and help anyone who’d been injured.
On one of these mornings, they came across a lady in her 80s.

Her home had been hit by a bomb.

She was staggering around alone in the ruins of where her home had been…
Unsurprisingly she was more than a little dazed (what with the bombing and everything), but they managed to get her to come out of her home.

However, when she did, they saw that the only thing she was wearing was the remains of what was once a night dress.
Thinking of her modesty, the community told her it might be a good idea to go back inside and put something on to make herself decent.

So she did…and came back out wearing nothing but a hat!
So, what can we take from this story today?

Well…
1⃣No matter what’s going on in life, we should always be looking out for others.

When our families can’t be on hand, our communities can take their place. Sticking together and making new families got us through then and has got us through the last 3 months too!
2⃣It’s really nice to have someone looking out for you, however old you are.

This week is #LonelinessAwarenessWeek. As lockdown eases and we all start to go back to work and school it can be easy to forget about those whose situation hasn’t changed.
But let’s not lose the community spirit that we’ve built up over the last few months.

Why not reach out to those who may be feeling their sacrifices to date have not been truly stoic and worthwhile...
A friendly text, voice on the end of the phone or even a note popped through the letterbox, could make the difference and let people know others are thinking of them.
3⃣ A REALLY nice hat can cover up a multitude of sins.
