Got my first COVID teaching evaluations back. 🙂 Here's what my M1s thought supported their asynchronous online learning wrt video-based learning.

🎥 1. Make new recordings addressing them as an online group. A recording from last year’s lecture to a face-to-face class makes them feel excluded.

😁 2. Turn your camera on and smile. They miss humans too.

3/6
➕ 3. Add/modify resources as you go to suit their needs. E.g., make a follow-up video based on their questions. This is supported by Moore’s Theory of Transactional Distance. ⬇️ program structure leads to ⬇️transactional distance (good!).

4/6
🗣️ 4. Pretend they’re there when recording. Speak as you’d speak during a conversation. Don't sound like a script-reading robot. You can drop the formality and still be professional. This is supported by Mayer’s voice principle from the 12 Principles of Multimedia Learning.

5/6
📧 5. Respond frequently. Waiting 24 hours to respond to an email is not conducive to asynchronous distance learning. They might be stuck on a threshold concept and unable to continue learning. Set aside several times a day to check student questions.
