My office is conducting an independent investigation into the NYPD’s actions throughout these protests and the policies and systemic realities that inform these actions.
Political protest is a fundamental civil right. One that must be protected against unlawful infringement.
We also must be clear what these protests are about: another life lost in a long line of unarmed Black people killed at the hands of law enforcement.
And a system that has allowed this to happen time and time again without making fundamental changes.
Protesters took to the streets with a righteous spirit for justice & change, not just for George Floyd, but Amadou Diallo, Sean Bell & Eric Garner here in New York.
For Ahmaud Arbery on a back road in Georgia.
For Breonna Taylor, asleep in her own bed in Louisville, Kentucky.
They took to the streets for both those whose names we say, and those whose names never made it onto the front page.
Today’s hearing is intended to shed light on how police in our nation’s largest city have handled protests where what is being protested is police violence itself.
It is to hear from those on the ground and those who have made the study of the system their life’s work.
We will hear from dozens of impacted individuals, elected officials, and advocacy groups.
Due to an outpouring of testimony submissions, we will be hosting a second day of our public hearing -- tomorrow at 11AM.
This is an opportunity for members of the public and those involved in confrontations to speak directly with our office and better inform our investigation.
Now, we will start to hear from witnesses.

Today, my office and a nationwide coalition of AGs are suing @Meta for harming kids with its platforms and fueling the youth mental health crisis.
We're going to end Meta's behavior and keep our kids safe online. ⤵️
Meta has claimed its platforms are safe for kids, but in reality, it knew its features were harmful.
The company designed its platforms with manipulative features that hook children while collecting data on kids under 13 without parental consent, violating child protection laws.
Its platforms are designed to ensure kids:
- Spend more time on their platforms.
- Compare themselves to their peers.
- And receive constant notifications, making them lose sleep and struggle to pay attention in school.
We're suing four nursing homes run by @CentersHealth and their owners and operators for allegedly pocketing over $83 million in taxpayer money that should have been used for resident care.
As a result, residents suffered greatly, were endangered, and even died.
Residents were forced to live in horrific conditions at:
- Beth Abraham Center in the Bronx.
- Holliswood Center in Queens.
- Buffalo Center in Erie County.
-Martine Center in Westchester.
They diverted $83 million for their own profit.
Meanwhile, residents were:
-Permanently injured
-Forced to sit in their own urine and feces for hours
-Severely malnourished and dehydrated
-Developing dangerous infections and sepsis from untreated bed sores
I'm in Hempstead to announce a lawsuit against Red Rose Rescue, an anti-abortion group, for illegally invading reproductive health care clinics in New York and disrupting services and terrorizing patients.
Every New Yorker has the right to safely access reproductive care.
Red Rose Rescue and its members have repeatedly infiltrated clinics on Long Island and in Westchester, threatening staff and patients.
They make fake appointments to gain access to clinics and then hijack the facilities to stop all services until they are physically removed.
At the @PPNChealth in Hempstead, a member locked the entrances to the building with industrial locks and superglue, delaying appointments and services for hours.
Once the locks were removed, he laid in the driveway so no one could enter until the police physically removed him.
