Compatriots...
Even after 100 days, we’re still at the beginning of the pandemic & it’ll be with us for months to come.
We accordingly have had to shape our response.

Nearly a 3rd of confirmed cased have been recorded in the past week alone.

Western Cape has been hard hit & counts for 60% of total confirmed cases.

Eastern Cape is seeing an increase
More and more of us know someone who is infected, at school, church or work.

Many are worried of the increase of Covid-19 & these are warranted and reasonable.

As we resume activities, the risk of infections are increasing
Studies show that wearing a cloth mask at all times when in public is one of the measures that reduce the rate of infection

Some South Africans haven’t taken up wearing masks

Wearing of masks isn’t a substitute of regular washing of hands, social distance
Social distancing is one of the effective way of reducing the spread of the virus.

Body sprays shouldn’t be used to combat Covid-19
We knew that a nation wide lockdown couldn’t be sustained forever.

As of now, our response is focused on taking personal responsibility to curb the spread of the disease.

Response of government is focused on hotspots & teams dispatched to such hotspots
Screenings have increased in various places etc.

South Africa has been affected by global shortage of test kits & thus had to prioritize the vulnerable.

We are therefore using every avenue to source supplies to increase testing capacity & supply
Covid-19 is also a global economic crisis. In South Africa, Covid has impacted millions of people

Some companies haven’t opened due to the restrictions & this means that there are businesses that haven’t earned income & people haven’t earned salaries
Consideration to the re-opening of the economy has been taking place with various experts & stakeholders.
BREAKING NEWS:

Restaurants are now going to be allowed to operate

Cinemas to be allowed

Casinos also

Hairdressers & beauty

Tennis, Golf & Cricket allowed

But needs to adhere to safety requirements as agreed by the representatives of the business
Dates for the re-opening of the above industries will be announced in due course.

We had to take into account the dire impact the lockdown has had & continues to have on people & businesses
Government is working closely with other agencies to forge common approach to ensure that countries are proactive.

Africa has over 250k confirmed cases & this is generally low in Africa.

African countries acted swiftly in implementing lockdown measures
The last 3 months have been difficult for women who work as hairdressers, in spas & techinicians.

Given that most women are involved in such industries & mainly being informal that we are re-opening
It’s with a heavy heart to stand in front of South Africans to address you following another pandemic waged by Men against Women.

President is appalled by the deaths.

Women are being raped & killed by men. Rapists & killers walk amongst others
Their killers through they’d silenced them & we will however speak for them.

We will speak of all the women who were killed by men.

We will speak for the 89yr old grandma & the elderly woman who was raped.
We will speak for #TshegofatsoPule unborn child.

President commends SAPS for swift arrests.

President has strong cod didn’t that the courts will send a strong message.

Government made 1.6 Billion to support GBV
Government has made sure that victims have support through helplines & government buildings have been made available for survivors who want to leave.

13 regional courts have been designated to be sexual offenses courts.
Police, magistrates etc have undergone sensitivity training.

Amendments are taking place and parliament is urged to speed up the process
President assures women and children that the criminal justice systems is focused on GBV.

Perpetrators of GBV must be met with the harshest sentences

It’s sad that the killings have increased since we moved to level 3
We need to ask difficult questions & examine the effect of alcohol abuse.

Studies have shown linkage between alcohol abuse & GBV.

It’s not alcohol that rapes & kills but men.

We thus need to draw lessons how we can curb this.
We need to encourage responsible drinking especially on young children.

We would need to look at more drastic measures to curb the abuse of alcohol.

Ultimately the success of ending GBV will require entire society support
By looking away, shaming women & remaining silent we become complicit in encouraging violence against Women.

Although GBV & Covid are different in their cause, they can both be overcomed
It is indeed all in our hands that we overcome.

May God Bless South Africa & Protect her People.
