Many follow me here after my features in @ElleUK, @MetroUK & the #antiracismchallenge I posted. So Iere is a thread of other pieces by my Black and Brown colleagues that provide insight into their experiences. Essential reading for both the public and fellow practitioners...
As a profession we can be opaque. I've had students tell me that they don't see members of the Bar that look like them; the public don't know what we do; & colleagues operate w/o insight into the experience of Black and brown members of the Bar. So, some reading material:
@CounselMagazine is an underused resource. The articles are available to be read by the public and are often insightful and brilliantly written: e.g. @_lesliethomas here discussing why racial diversity at the Bar matters.
counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/racia…
@NShotunde and @EssexBarrister discussing overcoming imposter syndrome in their journeys to the Bar. Also in @CounselMagazine counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/overc…
@EssexBarrister also has an autobiography coming out later this year about navigating the legal system as a mixed race barrister: hachette.co.uk/titles/alexand…
@NShotunde interviewing Martin Forde QC, discussing his role as the Independent Adviser to the Windrush Compensation Scheme, again, @counselmagazine counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/right…
@zeenat_islam in @CounselMagazine discussing why Diversity and Inclusion needs to be more than a tick box exercise: counselmagazine.co.uk/articles/diver…
@zeenat_islam discussing her experience and motivations for coming to the Bar with @ProjectRibcage: projectribcage.com/zeenat-islam/
@RabahKherbane discussing with @thebarcouncil his journey to the Bar from a non-traditional background: barcouncil.org.uk/media-campaign…
@mohsinzaidi's interview with @thetimes about his upcoming book which explores his experience of being first generation British-Pakistani, Muslim and Gay thetimes.co.uk/article/barris…
There are also some fantastic events being put on for free that you can enjoy from the comfort of your home e.g. this event with @JoSidhuQC @NShotunde and @_lesliethomas
This article in @thetimes featuring an interview with @_lesliethomas discussing the UK's issues with police brutality and the lack of Black faces working in the criminal justice system thetimes.co.uk/article/leslie…
