Today SCOTUS delivered a 5-4 victory to immigrant youth who've fought & organized for years for the right to stay. This week is DACA's 8th anniversary & is amidst one of the largest racial justice movements in history as activists take to the streets to protest police brutality.
DACA was a victory delivered by undocumented young people after years of pressure & fearless organizing, bc Congress failed for decades to deliver what the people want: citizenship for immigrants and an end to cruel enforcement. A new poll shows 85% of Americans support DACA.
Ever since Trump took office & rescinded DACA in 2017, immigrant youth, their families, and allies have been fighting to protect DACA. While this decision gives needed relief for DACA recipients & their families, immigrants are still under attack by this administration.
We also can’t forget this moment -- right now, we’re witnessing activists all over the world showing up in solidarity to condemn the racism, police violence, and attacks on Black lives that have for too long permeated our society.
The murder of George Floyd is one more moment, one more name, one more life lost to the systems of white supremacy that founded this country. The mechanisms that were created to perpetuate anti-Black racism & oppression are the same ones used to target, jail, & deport immigrants.
They’re rooted in white supremacy & often work in tandem. ICE, CBP, & police departments uphold systemic racism in our communities, & every year their budgets receive billions of $$ to continue terrorizing, policing, & committing acts of violence against Black & brown ppl.
That’s why when we say #DefundHate or #DefundICE, we also mean #DefundthePolice because they’re one in the same. And while Trump remains in office, Black, brown, & immigrant communities will continue to be under attack.
