1/ Sam - We're glad you and your DC Libertarian ilk continue bringing up the deeply flawed PEW research. You have no interest in seeking the truth, but we look at this as a teaching opportunity to show what seeking the truth looks like. Class is now in session. . .
2/ The major flaw in this study by @jensmanuel & @neil_ruiz is they lump ALL Computer & Math occupations, including lower wage occupations like *Computer Specialist* that doesn’t require a Bachelors (most workers in that occup. don’t hold a Bachelors) together for US workers.
3/ By definition, an H-1B must have at least a Bachelors degree and the occupations eligible for an H-1B requires a Bachelors. So, *Computer Support Specialists* wouldn’t qualify for an H-1B, yet Manuel & Ruiz left it in the data and it skewed the wages lower for US workers.
4/ The 491,000 *Computer Support Specialists* in the Pew study were paid a median annual wage: $1,060 X 52 weeks = $55,120.

Pew is skewing its US wages calculation lower by including occupations that are ineligible for H-1B (for instance *Computer Support Specialist*).
5/ We know H-1Bs hold at least a Bachelors & many hold Masters. Wages within an occupation are strongly correlated w/ educational attainment.
So, a fair comparison would find a way to control for this such as only including US wage earners who hold at least a Bachelors.
6/ Furthermore, there’s no control for geographic location – high cost of living areas. A salary of $83k in Silicon Valley is very low. Are H-1Bs more concentrated in high cost areas? Likely.

The upshot is that this is not an apples to apples comparison.
7/ And anyone who works or hires in the IT field would scoff at $75k as the market rate for all US IT workers. It’s way below ANY IT wage survey. See Robert Half survey link below. Whose interests are served by putting up this PEW study again and again? roberthalf.com/salary-guide/t…
8/ Here’s the closest thing that we’ve gotten to an apples-to-apples comparison. Comparing Tata & Infosys (Indian IT Outsourcing firms) H-1B wages versus actual wages of So Cal Edison (SCE) US IT workers who were replaced (see attached image). Do we need to point the obvious?
9/ In closing, not only is it laughable that you try to claim that Indian IT Outsourcing firms pay H-1B visa workers "above" the median salary of that of US workers after the analysis we have just demonstrated here, but it's disturbing that you defend outsourcing companies. /End
