13/ These asre just a few examples. While it’s reasonable to point out that the British wasn’t the only empire, it was indeed what everyone did at the time. It’s also possible to argue that the record of empire was mixed.
14/ And that it brought benefits to the colonised peoples as well as costs, and that reasonable people can disagree about them and discuss them in their context rather than by today’s standards or refracted through simplistic anti-colonial ideology.
15/ Nevertheless, Britain, like other imperial powers, acquired its empire by force and held onto it as long as it could by force, trashing the very principles the empire’s defenders (correctly) say were its chief benefit.
