Key Updates for Week 24, ending June 13, 2020
cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
Nationally, levels of influenza-like illness (ILI) and COVID-19-like illness (CLI) remain lower than peaks seen in March and April but are increasing slightly in some regions.
The overall cumulative COVID-19 hospitalization rate is 94.5 per 100,000, with the highest rates in people aged 65 years and older (286.9 per 100,000) and 50-64 years (143.0 per 100,000).
Overall, indicators used to monitor COVID-19 activity are low nationally; however, small increases were seen in the percentage of specimens testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 and the percentage of visits for ILI or CLI in multiple parts of the country.
The percentage of outpatient and emergency department visits for ILI are below baseline nationally and in all regions of the country. Most regions have remained stable, compared to last week; however, a few regions have noted slight increases in both ILI and CLI.
Cumulative hospitalization rates for COVID-19 in adults (18-64 years) at this time are higher than cumulative end-of-season hospitalization rates for influenza over each of the past 5 influenza seasons.
For people 65 years and older, current cumulative COVID-19 hospitalization rates are within ranges of cumulative influenza hospitalization rates observed at comparable time points* during recent influenza seasons.
For children (0-17 years), cumulative COVID-19 hospitalization rates are much lower than cumulative influenza hospitalization rates at comparable time points* during recent influenza seasons.
Nationwide during week 24, 0.8% of patient visits reported through ILINet were due to ILI. This percentage is well below the national baseline of 2.4%.
All ten regions are at low levels and below their region-specific baselines; however, 3 regions (region 5 [Midwest], region 6 [South Central] and region 9 [West Coast]) reported slight increases.
Nationwide during week 24, 1.7% (peak was 6.9%) of emergency department visits captured in NSSP were due to CLI and 0.6% were due to ILI.
Cumulative hospitalization rates.

School age (5-17) now 3.5 hospitalizations per 100,000 population through week 24.

Through week 17 when they stopped tracking, lab-confirmed influenza hospitalizations were 24.8 per 100,000 in this age group.
7.1% of all deaths occurring during the week ending June 13, 2020 (week 24) were due to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19. This is the eighth week of a declining percentage of deaths due to PIC; however, the percentage remains above the epidemic threshold of 6.0% for week 24.
Again, flu and pneumonia below the epidemic threshold, so it's non-pneumonia COVID deaths keeping us above.
