I’ve been collecting ideas & practice on what it means to bring kindness to online meetings & sessions. Here’s some of what people do and have shared. This week how #kindness can mean #slow. All v simple and intuitive.
People & group process needs ebb & flow over time to do good work. An act of kindness can to add small islands of recovery and peace into sessions. A hand drawn simple sunburs...
Before the session. Write up & share key questions & process you will be working on together. It’s important for accessibility & lowers cognitive load for people as they navigate the session, deepening the quality and inclusivity of the conversation
1 minute to spare: get them to turn off their mic, put their pen down. Turn their chair to face away from their device, stretch & move eye focus to the darkest spot in the room, the lightest spot, & the furthest point they can see. This refreshes attention when fatigued.
2 min: build in a 2 min quiet arrival to your session & offer the time back to your participants so they can make themselves comfortable & look after their needs. In my opinion, this is possibly the quietest and kindest disruptive act in our power as session hosts.
3 min: at the beginning of each item, post the question you’re going to work, turn off cameras & mics. Offer 3 min of privacy and quiet to write down what it brings up for them. Invite them to underline / circle the parts of their notes they want to bring to the conversation
10 min: punctuate the session with 10 min journaling slots. Alternatively offer a 10 min task free break or ‘go stare out the window/wander & think slot
15 min+ break out & talk in small groups. Invite people to speak in turn for 1 min ea without interruption, repeat that cycle for 2 min ea and only then enter into open discussion. This process encourages deep listening, quality of air time and make the most of short time slots.
Any other simple tips and practice to add?
