Trump's rally made clear that his strategy now for 2020 is lean into the culture war and try to tie Joe Biden to the far left. This is the worst strategy possible for him. It won't work.
When you still have a pandemic, 20% real unemployment and tumultuous uprisings your bitching about statues and the fake news media being mean to you rings hollow. It's also obviously untrue that Biden is like pro-antifa or some shit. Embarrassing strategy.
Trump hammered Hillary on corruption, NAFTA, the Iraq war & he postured as being anti-establishment. That was so much more potent than leaning into culture war symbolism and pretending Biden is antifa. The right wing bubble has dulled his instincts.
Here's the thing, even if Trump's strategy was air tight - as it arguably was in 2016 - he would have a HUGE uphill battle because of a pandemic and 20% real unemployment! Any president, no matter how politically savvy, would struggle to overcome that political reality.
As I've said on the show 50 times 'populist bomb thrower' is appealing to people when they feel the establishment is screwing them. But when we have acute national crises like a pandemic & economic implosion, a 'predictable, steady hand of leadership' becomes much more appealing
People psychologically don't want somebody to fan the flames of division at a moment like this. It adds to the chaos. They want somebody to at least pretend to be a leader who can rise above and unite (aka, the exact opposite of Trump).
