Today’s #Yiakl#SundaySpotlight is dedicated to honoring and remembering the #Eritrean disable veterans of Mai Habar who heroically fell down standing up for their rights and against the burgeoning tyrannical regime. #WeAreComingHome
As we reflect on June20, the day we honor our fallen heroes, the story of #Maihabar disabled war veterans reminds us of the numerous ways Eritrea fell short in honoring the sacrifices of those who sacrificed the ultimate so that we can enjoy the fruits of sovereignty & democracy.
We overlooked those who paid the heaviest prices as the condition of those disabled veterans in MaiHabar shows.
These disabled veterans showed us by example that we should stand up for our rights - we neither supported them nor learned from them. #Yiakl
Although initially we got horrified by the massacre, we quickly forgot about it, one of many, perhaps among the first of many, horrific things we learned to get used to over the years which led us to the path of tolerating even more horrific crimes committed by IA’s regime
4. We failed to do justice for them and hold accountable those who committed the horrific crime - very emblematic of how our lame response to such crimes, which in turn contributed to the mushrooming of the culture of impunity that is nearly destroying our country.
Worst of all, we don't even know the names of those fallen heroes. We were somehow complicit in the efforts of the autocratic regime of IA to erase memories of those who stood up to tyranny. #Yiakl #Eritrea #June20
On this day, let's reflect on the dereliction of duties to our heroes and begin the process of identifying the names and stories of the heroes of Mai-Habar.
Heroes - we salute you, remember you, and pledge to honor your sacrifice and learn from the example you set for us. #Yiakl
