Denying the risks of coronavirus is CENTRAL to Trump's 2020 campaign effort. The denial is fundamental both to his economic plans *and* to his campaign plans: lots of rallies in exactly the places where new cases are being confirmed fastest.
If Trump core voters do not accept Trump's virus-denialism, that is BIG trouble for Trump. It means they doubt his reopening plans. It means they doubt his promise of a fast economic bounce back.
It means they doubt all his claims to have done a "great job" in the greatest crisis of his presidency.

Most fundamentally, it means that offered in Joe Biden an acceptable alternative to Trump, older, more conservative voters have both a place to go - and a reason to move.

Judge Rao's intervention on Flynn's behalf reminded me of something, and I just remembered what it was ...
Auberon Waugh's introduction to his book on the Jeremy Thorpe trial of 1978. This is the trial that provided the plot for the miniseries, "A Very English Scandal."

Thorpe was guilty as could be, but acquitted thanks to his influential friends and connections. Waugh wrote:

Barr letter to Berman asserts that he & Berman had been in discussions about promotion to another job, SEC chair maybe.

But of course Berman would have remembered that Barr & Trump played this same trick before. 1/x
To clear out the inconvenient US Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jessie Liu, Trump offered a promotion to a big job at Treasury. Once Liu resigned, the promotion was yanked away - on grounds that Liu was insufficiently loyal to Trump. 2/x
I wrote today that the trick played on Liu by Barr and Trump can be used only so often before the targets get wise. Barr tried it one time more than that. END
