A brief meditation on tweets like this. When someone says "You should leave off 'I wasn't his biggest fan'," my thought is: Write your own goddamn tweets and don't try to micro-manage anyone else's. But there's another aspect to this. /1
When someone writes, as @GenMhayden did, in defense of a political leader they had disagreements with, it's important signposting. It means: "This matters, because I would be willing to criticize this leader on any number of other things." That's important to know. /2
For one thing, it's a way of saying: "This issue is important to me on its merits, and not just because I am some leader's fanboy." It also matters because it's a way of saying that people who have other disagreements can agree on some pretty big things. /3
So when someone says "I wasn't Obama's [or anyone else's] biggest fan," maybe resist the urge to tell someone who is MOSTLY agreeing with you that they must COMPLETELY agree with you.
